1. The Grouchy Ladybug I enjoyed reading this book because it had a lot of colorful pages. It was neat that on every page the ladybug would meet something different. Also, it had different times, so you would learn how to tell time while you read the book.
2. The Foot Book This is only one of the Dr. Seus books that I read when I was a kid. These books were always interesting and entertaining becasue there would always be made-up words in the story and the pictures were fun to look at. It keeps a child's attention since the book has a funny plot and for some reason choldren, at least in my opinion, love to listen to someone read a book if it has rhyming words in them.
3. Dinosaurs Before Dark This book was another one that had me use my imagination. Since dinosaurs are extinct, I had to picture what they would look like, besides what I saw in other books. At one moment, kids are in a treehouse, which you can find today, and the next they are surrounded by dinosaurs. It made me wish that I had a treehouse that could do this, or take me someplace that I would like to go to.
4. Little Miss Grumblestone This wasn't the name of a book, but it was a short story that was in a bedtime story book. I liked this story because I related to the character and it was nice reading about something that I would encounter in real life. This was the only story that I had my mom reread to me. Also, since it was only a couple pages long, I was able to pay attention to the story better.
5. Rumble in the Jungle One of my favorite things to read about as a kid were animals. This book talked about different kinds of animals that you would find in the jungle. Also, it incorporated rhyming which was fun to read.
6. Aliens Don't Wear Braces This was only one of the Bailey School Kid's series that I enjoyed reading. Every book in this series had me use my imagination. All the books were about characters that don't exist, like aliens, vampires, and mummies. It was nice that they had you think about the characters and use clues to figure things out, just like detectives would do.
Books important for children
As you can see from my list above, I don't have many books that I read that I enjoyed as a child. This is mainly because I was never really into reading, since it always seemed that we were forced to read for AR and I would rather play outside than sit down to read a book. From the list that I did come up with, I could get a sense on why I enjoyed them in the first place. First of all, thee were colorful pictures on most of the pages. Not many kids can sit down and read pages of text. Pictures were a nice break from continuous reading. Also, the pictures went along with the story. If a child is stuck on a word, pictures could help with context clues and they could get a better understanding on what they are reading. Then, the stories had an interesting plot. Some of them were about things you see everyday, and others were about made-up creatures. Keeping children entertained, but also learning life lessons at the same time is a way to keep their attention. To go along with the made-up creatures, it allows us to use our imaginations. It is important for children to use their imagination because it can be used to express who they are and it enables them to think outside the box. The last thing that is important to children's literature is that they get to share their experience with others. Children love it when someone will sit next to them and read the story together. This gives them an opportunity to spend quality time with others. It also can enhance their reading skills, since there is another person with them that can help them figure out words when they get stuck.
English Curriculum
The English curriculum has come a long way since it was first introduced in American history. There are National Standards that teachers are required to cover in grades K-12. This is a problem, since someone had to decide what children are to know by a certain age. Times always change, so at some point children will have to learn at a higher level than they do now at their current age. One thing that was said in the reading was: “nor did they suggest a canon of books that all children should read.” Standards don’t mention anything about reading books and that’s not good, since we are trying to encourage children to read more often than they do now.
One major event that is occurring that worries teachers is standardized tests. These are becoming more common and they the basics of everyday curriculum. Teachers have to make sure that what they are teaching their students will allow them to pass these tests. By just learning the material to pass these tests, students won’t really be learning anything. Also, it will take the fun out of learning if all you did was memorize material. Literature should be educational, but at the same time fun. How are you supposed to get children to be interested and willing to learn and read if you take the fun out of it?
Literature is a way for children to escape their everyday lives and enter a world in which they want to live in. Reading books also helps them relate to characters that are going through the same situations they are. You want a child to read because they want to, not because they have to. If you tell the students to read a certain book, they won’t want to have anything to do with it, since it isn't something that they would probably pick out on their own. This is the same as it is for any subject. If a child has no interest in the subject, they are not going to want to learn. By allowing the young adults to choose what they want to read, their achievement will greatly improve.
To summarize up everything, literature should be taught with the young adults in mind. We have to realize that every child is different, and so is their learning development. Some like mystery, while others like adventure. In the classroom, there should be a variety of choices for them to choose from. Even though they might be allowed to choose, it is also a good idea to introduce a completely genre to them so they aren’t always looking at the same ones. To go along with people being different, not everyone in the classroom will be at the same reading level. If you are teaching poetry, you can have the distribute the same poem to everyone, but have it worded differently for those who are having trouble understanding what is being said. The best way to teach literature is to make sure young adults have a variety of selections, it’s something they can comprehend, and it’s something that spikes their interest while having fun. When all of these components are met, they will want to learn and they will also do better on tests, since it’s not just learning straight from the book.
